Detroit Rising, Tony Harrison’s Journey Continues With Another Stoppage Win

Junior middleweight rising prospect Tony “Super Bad” Harrison (21-0 17 KO) extended his stoppage streak to ten defeating Pablo “Sepulturero” Munguia (20-7 11 KO) by third round TKO on Friday Night Fights from the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Munguia was game from the opening bell, moving forward and having some success in landing overhand punches on the taller Harrision; however, the difference in skill set was a mismatch. Towards the end of the second round, Harrison landed a short crisp right which floored Munguia and had him visibly wobbled. Munguia made it to his feet and survived to the bell. It was evident the end was near. Harrison attacked a still hurt Munguia to open round three landing multiple shots causing referee Arthur Mercante Jr. to stop the fight.

Some wound have preferred to see the Kronk Gym product fighting a higher caliber of opponent but that is the beauty of bringing a young highly skilled fighter along at the right pace, you simply don’t have to rush.

Munguia is not your typical opponent but is a gatekeeper of sorts to provide Harrison and his Team another opportunity to gauge how they handle every type of style before moving on to a higher quality of opposition. The “Gravedigger” has an approach that was no doubt forged from the repetitive motions of his job outside of boxing

Munguia is used to working in confined spaces while digging graves. He employed that strategy against Harrison moving underneath his reach and putting himself in the “hole” of Harrison’s guard. Further, when you are excavating dirt, you throw it out of the hole by moving the shovel overhead, a similar motion while throwing overhand punches. Munguia tried his best to align his job with his craft.

Said Harrison

“He’s definitely one tough cookie but I had to sit down with him to let him know you can’t just walk me down, we can make it this type of fight all night long”

“He was gaining a little courage, so you know me being the warrior that I am, it was time to sit down with him, I can’t keep letting him gain momentum, take some to give some, I know I’m the harder puncher and that’s what happens”

Harrison attacked the body of his shorter and less fit opponent from the opening bell while landing right hand power shots although his usually active jab was nonexistent. Although Munguia’s awkward style contributed to Harrison getting hit more solidly than he has in the past, the defensive component of his game will need to be addressed going forward.

After the fight, Harrision spoke about his body work, lack of jab, and his defense:

“We worked on going to the body all camp, when you get in front of him, he’s definitely a lot shorter, then what the pads look like”

“Tonight means nothing, it’s over with, I did what I was supposed to do against a veteran, a tough cookie who nobody stopped within the last fifteen fights, that says a lot about me, a lot of these guys are getting the same kind of opponents and going ten rounds with them, twelve rounds with them, I did it in three. We definitely have a lot to work on, we got hit a little bit too much, you know just being lazy and not wanting to use my jab, like I said, we did what we’re suppose to do, I don’t let anybody back me up, at the end of the day, we going to make it a fight, let’s make it that.”

Harrison on what is next,

“Al Haymon has the blue print to the car, my dad, he’s driving the car, me and my team are just riding in it and I’m the machine, I’m going to get on the phone with Al Haymon and see what he has next, hopefully he has good plans for me, I’m knocking everything in front of me out, even though I’m getting hit, I’m giving the fans what they want to see”

Harrison is ranked #12 by the IBF and will no doubt be on the move throughout the alphabet soup. Perhaps bouts against the likes of a Vanes Martirosyan, Austin Trout, or a Carlos Molina will be in his immediate future?

Don’t criticize the choice of opponent here, there are lessons learned from every outing. The Detroit fighter with the superstar potential and dazzling skills did what he was supposed to do. Like a player moving through levels in a video game, he defeated the boss on this level and will now move on his journey to the next where another boss awaits, hopefully one residing in the top ten bringing out the best we’ve yet to see from “Super Bad”.

Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KO’s) is the reigning WBC and Ring Magazine middleweight world champion and the first native of Puerto Rico to become world champion in four different weight classes. ROBERT & CASEY GUERRERO JOIN ARKANSAS TECH AND BE THE MATCH IN EFFORT TO BREAK WORLD RECORD FOR BONE MARROW REGISTRIES

RUSSELLVILLE, ARKANSAS (April 13, 2015 – Six-Time and Four-Division World Champion, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero and BeTheMatch.org in an effort to break the world record for bone marrow registries in a 24-hour period. In addition, the group will attempt to break the 1-hour world record for registries as well. Arkansas Tech’s Be The Match bone marrow registry event will begin at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14, and continue through 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, on the university’s campus.

Joining “The Ghost” will be his wife, Casey Guerrero, who is a cancer survivor and a recipient of a bone marrow transplant from the BeTheMatch.org(National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP). Together they will inspire everyone on campus and help students register while relaying the important message of being a donor.

“What an honor to be invited to this great event put on by Arkansas Tech University and BeTheMatch.org,” said Robert Guerrero. “Casey and I are going to do our part to help register as many people as possible. I really believe we are going to break the records. Many lives will be saved and that brings me great pleasure. I’m super motivated and can’t wait to get on campus and go to work.”

Garcia By Majority Decision Over Peterson, Lee-Quillin Battle To A Split Draw

Lamont Peterson (33-3-1 17 KO) almost had a perfect game plan on Saturday night from Brooklyn, almost. Peterson lost to Danny Garcia (30-0 17 KO) by majority decision, 115-113 X2 and 114-114; however, we may have seen a different outcome had Peterson been a bit more active in the early rounds.

I saw what you did Peterson, I saw the game plan, it took a few moments but it became clear. Give away rounds early, frustrate and wear down Garcia, come on late and apply pressure, Garcia will fade.

Fact is, Garcia did fade and looked almost befuddled in the championship rounds but it was the early rounds that did Peterson in. Peterson stayed away so much early that Garcia had to stop in his tracks pound his gloves and motion him to fight. Garcia was frustrated throughout the fight as Peterson moved away utilizing the steps of a dancer, looked away not respecting what may be coming his way, shuffled his feet, and faked bolo punches.

Garcia was the rightful winner if only by the slightest of margins. The fight was Peterson’s had he chosen to begin his plan a bit sooner.

“I did my part. I’m not calling it a robbery but it was a good fight, I don’t expect an easy journey for me to get where I’m going. I feel great. That’s probably the least contact I’ve ever had in a fight.”

Lee-Quillin

The co-feature on the Garcia-Peterson card was a hotly contested middleweight donnybrook between Andy Lee (36-2-1 24 KO) and Peter Quillin (31-0-1 22 KO) which resulted in a split draw, 113-113, 113-112 Lee, 113-112 Quillin.

Early, Quillin was landing solid shots coming out of an extremely tight guard. Towards the end of the first, he dropped Lee with an overhand right. Lee wobbled to his feet as Quillen moved in for the kill buckling Lee again with a left as the bell sounded.

Lee recovered enough to have a competitive second but was dropped again in the third; however, as usually happens between a southpaw and orthodox fighter, their feet being tangled may have contributed to Lee hitting the canvas.

Over the next three rounds, both fighters were giving as good as they were getting. In the seventh, Lee dropped Quillin for the first time in his career with right hook. Quillin wasn’t overly hurt by the shot and fought to the bell.

For the remainder of the fight, there were a lot of close rounds which could have gone either way.

“It was a tough fight. I got dropped early because I was lazy, but I got the momentum late in the fight and boxed consistently,” Lee said. “I understand with two knockdowns, people felt he won. The decision was fair. I could have done better tonight.”

I’m grateful that I was going to get dropped that I was able to get back up and fight. I came here to fight and I was able to go 12 rounds. I could have kept going. Jennings, who hails from Philadelphia, is looking to end Klitschko’s reign on the heavyweight division.

PUERTO RICO (April 8, 2015 Gary Shaw Productions top contender, Puerto Rican sensation Thomas Dulorme (22-1, 14 KO’s), is just 9 pounds over the weight limit of 140 lbs. for his Saturday, April 18th showdown against “2014 Fighter of the Year” and former lightweight world champion, Terence Crawford (25-0, 17 KOs).

DANNY GARCIA

“I just want to give the fans a great fight. I want them to see the best Danny Garcia. At the end of the day, this is the fight the fans want to see. My main focus is putting on a great show for the fans.

“I’ve faced a lot of skillful boxers in my career and I’m still undefeated. That should tell the fans around the world who has more skill. Come April 11 when he’s feeling these two bombs on his face he’s going to forget about his skill.

“I just want to give fans a great fight. I’m not too worried about the ‘0’ on my record. I fight hard to protect it but my main focus is to go in there and get the job done one fight at a time.

“Everything I’ve done in my career is for a reason. Now I’m here on NBC fighting on this big playing field. This is great for boxing and a breath of fresh air for the sport.

“I just want to be confident and humble at the same time. I want the fans to love me because I’m being myself. It’s very important for a young champion.

“I’m going to try to dictate the pace, be smart, move my head, use my feet and land good punches. I can’t try to chase him down.

“This is just another fight for me. I’m not worried about being the main event. I just love to fight. As long as I’m fighting I’m happy.

“A lot of people see us fight and see us take punches, but that’s just the easy part. The sacrifice in the gym and putting my body through punishment is the rough part.

“I’m not trying to prove anyone wrong, but this fight is important to me and I want to win it. I want to be the top guy and that means beating the top guy.

“People talk about him beating Matthysse and Matthysse beating me, but anyone who knows about boxing knows that doesn’t mean anything. Come Saturday night I will prove to everyone that I’m a better fighter than Danny Garcia.

“Angel Garcia has his opinion on this fight, and I respect it. He can go on record and say anything he wants, but if he says Danny Garcia is stronger than me, I’ll tell you that’s a lie.

“We’re not worried about Danny’s power. A lot of people have asked me about that but I’m not worried. Danny Garcia had a split decision with Kendall Holt, who I knocked out. No one seems to mention that.

“I’m comfortable with whatever way this fight goes. I’m almost guaranteeing the win.

“I don’t think they’re taking me lightly. At the end of the day, Garcia knows this is a fight and he knows he hasn’t fought anyone like me. I’m expecting a big victory Saturday night.

“You never know what you’re going to see with me. Whatever I feel like I need to do to win, that’s what I’ll do. I’m prepared 100 percent. I’m in shape for 30 rounds and I’ll be ready for anything. ”

ANDY LEE

“We’ve made unbelievable progress in the last year on my skills and everything has really just clicked for me and my team and now we’re seeing the results in the ring.

“I’m very proud to be an Irishman from Limerick defending his world championship in New York, it doesn’t get much better than that.

“There’s been a huge weight lifted off my shoulders since winning the world-title. It’s what I always wanted to do and I’ve been touted as a champion for years and if I never got it I would have been disappointed. Now the monkey is off my back and I can just box and show people who I am.

“We’ve made physical and tactical improvements in the gym since the last fight and hopefully they’ll show up in the ring on Saturday.

“I think this could be a technical fight or it could be a bit of a fire fight. It’s going to be a little of both at times. There will be moments where we’re looking at each other, figuring each other out, but once we exchange it could be explosive.

“Quillin is sure of himself, but he has to be, I have the same mentality. You have to be to compete in this sport.

“Fighting at home like Quillin is on Saturday, brings a different kind of pressure to the table, it’s the pressure of expectations and people you know coming to the fights. That’s also pressure and I know all about that.

“I haven’t needed to build up my confidence for this fight. It’s not time to think. It’s time to do what I’ve been doing every day in the gym.”

PETER QUILLIN

“I never trailed in a fight and came back and won like Lee. I’ve just won all the time right out of the gate. Those other guys aren’t ‘Kid Chocolate’ so I think that’s why this fight was made.

“It’s a big fight for him and a big fight for me. He’s a smart fighter when he’s in trouble so I have to watch out for that. Most importantly I just need to be true to myself.

“A lot of people had Lee as the underdog in his last fight but he came out and did great. That’s the thing about boxing; one punch can change the fight.

“I’m getting paid for 12 rounds so I’m preparing for 12 rounds but if I can get him out of there early I will.

“My whole life has been struggles and I’ve had to overcome every single one of those struggles. This is going to be no different from that.

“Being a father of course made me more inspired and watching my uncle pass has made me more motivated than ever to accomplish everything I want.

“When I gave up the belt I learned that I can be a bigger man and make tough decisions like that all of the time. People think losing is easy, but winning all the time is a different kind of pressure.”

ERROL SPENCE JR.

“I am the best young prospect in the game. I’m on the borderline of contender status and I believe I’m one fight away from being a contender.

“I’m a little bit of a mix style-wise. I’m a boxer, I can punch and I can fight if I have to.

“The fight I learned the most from was with Emanuel Lartey, he was undefeated along with me and it was my first real fight and first time going the distance.

“I see myself fighting all the top guys in the welterweight division. I see myself with Keith Thurman, Amir Khan and any top welterweight.

“I’m going to look good as always on Saturday night, It’s going to be fantastic and I’m going to come out with the victory.”

MARCUS BROWNE

Stevenson Defends Title, Beterbiev Impresses Again

WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (26-1, 21 knockouts) beat Sakio Bika on Saturday at Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada by unanimous decision with scores of 116-110, 115-110 and 115-111.

The cards were a bit generous for the challenger’s effort as the man known as “Superman” won more rounds than he was given credit for. In addition, Stevenson also had two knockdowns, dropping the “Scorpion” in Rounds 6 and 9; although the one in the sixth was more of a slip.

Stevenson, a southpaw, dictated the fight with his jab while repeatedly landing the straight left and did a good job of working both high and low. Bika is as tough and game an opponent as there is in the sport but is unorthodox and always seems to be on unsteady feet even when he is not hurt.

Although Bika landed a few power shots he was mostly awkward and outclassed by the champion and as is usually the case in a Bika fight, you had a few headbuts and rough tactics.

In the post fight interview, Stevenson was not asked about a possible future showdown with WBA, WBO, and IBF light heavy champion Sergey Kovalev…WHAT?????? I won’t name names here or comment on the faux pas because that dude took a beating on Twitter; however, his comment calling the fight “epic” was just as bad.

Stevenson did what he had to do in defending his title for a fifth time and was facing a very tough out but a like effort against Kovalev would be kryptonite.

On the undercard, rising light heavyweight prospect Artur Beterbiev (8-0 8 KO) stopped Gabriel Campillo (25-7-1) by 4th round TKO.

Beterbiev didn’t take long to let us know it would be a short night. Beterbiev dropped Campillo in the first round with a solid right hand but Campillo was able to use his wobbly legs to stay out of harms way to the bell.

Beterbiev would work the body and continue to land big power shots over the next two rounds which softened Campillo up for the kill in round four. Beterbiev walked down Campillo in the fourth and landed a huge right cross sending Campillo into the ropes, his head recoiling back and then forward as Campillo finished him with a left hook.

Beterbiev looks to have the goods, eight fights into his career, he’s already stopped two former title holders in convincing fashion. It wasn’t just this brutal stoppage against a former WBA titleholder but also against Tavoris Cloud another former titleholder.

Amir Khan To Face Chris Algieri

Amir Khan announced via a YouTube video that his next opponent would most likely be Chris Algieri in a bout on May 30th possibly at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. All that’s needed is Al Haymon’s blessing which is expected.

Said Khan, ‘You can class him as an A-class opponent.’He has fought decent opponents, beaten decent opponents, and just fell short against Manny Pacquiao, which is an A star opponent.’He’s a decent boxer overall. He knows how to box and knows how to move well. He takes a decent amount of shots and he’s got a decent amount of power, so I think overall it’s going to be a good fight for me.”

It was probably too soon for a Kell Brook fight so hopefully that will be next for both later this summer or in the fall.

Algieri who has not fougt since his blowout loss to Manny Pacquiao last November recently began working with John David Jackson who has been busy with WBA, IBF, and WBO light heavyweight slugger Sergey Kovalev. The addition of Jackson is interesting and after the Pacquiao fiasco, a needed one.
