Mario Barrios Talks Move Up In Weight, Career, And More

How is the transition from super-featherweight to super-lightweight coming along?

“With the move to super-lightweight, my body feels a lot stronger. I’m still growing, so making super-featherweight was just getting to difficult. Fighting at 140 pounds seems to be the best
option for me right now in my career. Eventually I’ll be moving up to welterweight at some point.”

What can you tell us about your upcoming opponent, Yardley Suarez?

“I don’t know much about him except that he’s a tough fighter from Mexico with a winning record. He’s a right hander who’s been in the ring with some good opposition. I know he’s coming to
fight so I’m not taking him lightly.”

Can you talk about fighting in New York at the Barclays Center?

“This will be my second time fighting out there. The fans are great and it’s a beautiful venue. The Barclays Center seems to have taken over the Madison Square Garden as the new boxing arena.
As a kid, you always dream of fighting in a major city like New York. I’m just glad I’m able to start building a fan base here. I’m excepting a live crowd to be in attendance with the Thurman vs. Garcia fight taking place in the main event, and that has
me excited.”

Talk about training with your new coach, Virgil Hunter, and what you like about him?

“In addition to Virgil being a great motivator, he also brings a lot of knowledge and experience to the table. I’m soaking up all everything that he’s teaching me. One thing about Virgil,
he’ll let you know exactly how he feels. I love that he’s a no-nonsense type of guy. We are working really good together and I’m happy that he’s in my corner.”

Do you feel you need a few more fights at super-lightweight before you start fighting the contenders in the division?

“This will only be my second fight at super-lightweight, so I feel after a few more bouts, I’ll be ready to step up to the top contenders. I’m still getting used to the weight change, but
like I said, I feel strong, and I’m getting comfortable.”

(June 29, 2016) – Undefeated super featherweight contender Mario Barrios (15-0, 8 KOs) is deep into training camp for his world title eliminator against former title challenger Devis Boschiero (39-4-1, 21 KOs) Saturday, July 9 in the main event of Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN and ESPN Deportes from Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, New Jersey.

Barrios will be taking on the most accomplished opponent of his career as he looks to put himself in the number two position for Jose Pedraza’s 130-pound title. For this training camp, Barrios has moved part of his training camp from San Antonio to Las Vegas where he has sparred at the UNLV Gym and at the gym of former world champion Robert Guerrero.

Here is what Barrios had to say about his fight, training camp and more:

On fighting in his first 12-round main event…

“This is what I’ve worked my whole life for, to be fighting in main events on national television. I’m confident that I’ll be able to the full 12-rounds if need be. My goal is to get the knockout though. I really want to make a statement in this fight.”

On his matchup with Devis Boschiero...

“All I know about Boschiero is that he’s got a lot of fights and he’s a top contender. I know he’s hungry so I’m not taking him lightly. I’ve seen some tape on him and I know he likes to come forward. Everyone can expect to see a lot of had punches being thrown by both of us. I’m expecting a war.”

On the landscape of the super featherweight division…

“It’s a very tough division loaded with a lot of great fighters. I would say Lomachenko, Pedraza and Vargas are the top dogs for now. Salido is also up there. It’s one of the toughest divisions in boxing. I’m hoping I can become a champion in this division. A victory against Boschiero puts me right there to challenge for the title. I’m a hungry fighter and everyone will see that on July 9.”

On hosting training camp in Las Vegas for the first time…

“Training in Las Vegas has been incredible. Running in high elevation is something new for me. I had to get used to it when I first got out here. It’s been a tough camp but I know all the hard word will pay off.”

On fighting on ESPN during primetime on Saturday night...

“I’m very happy to be fighting on ESPN during primetime on Saturday night. I have a lot of family, friends and fans back home who’ll be tuning in. I just want to go out there and shine. The April 16 event features a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBC tripleheader headlined by undefeated rising star Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. taking on former world champion Chris Algieri. Televised coverage begins at 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT and will see cruiserweight world champion Krzysztof Glowacki defending his title against former cruiserweight champion Steve “U.S.S. Cunningham and undefeated 2012 U.S. Olympian “Sir” Marcus Browne battling fellow unbeaten Radivoje “Hot Rod” Kalajdzic.

Barrios makes his east coast debut in an eight-round super featherweight bout while Giacon looks to put the 140-pound division on notice when he competes in an eight-round affair.

A trio of exciting fighters representing Brooklyn will enter the ring as undefeated star Heather “The Heat” Hardy (15-0, 3 KOs) competes in an eight-round junior featherweight bout while Golden Gloves champions Chris Colbert (4-0, 2 KOs) and Earl Newman (8-0, 6 KOs) compete in a four-round featherweight bout and an eight-round cruiserweight bout respectively.

International action will heat up the ring at Barclays Center as 26-year-old Polish contender Lukasz Maciec (22-3-1, 5 KOs) fights in an eight-round super welterweight bout, 28-year-old Belgian Dardan Zenunaj (11-1, 9 KOs) fights in an eight-round junior lightweight affair and 22-year-old Russian Radzhab Butaev (1-0, 1 KO), fighting out of Brooklyn, in a six-round super welterweight fight against South Carolina’s TyKeem Sadler (6-1, 4 KOs)

A tall featherweight at more than six feet, the 20-year-old Barrios picked up seven victories in a jam-packed 2015 in which he stopped five opponents inside the distance, including an uppercut left hook combo that ended the night of Manuel Vides in December. The San Antonio-native turned pro in 2013 and is on the fast track towards a world title shot as he makes his 2016 debut.

A winner of six-straight fights, Giacon is coming off of a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Steve Jamoye in October 2015 that put him in the top contender status in the division. The 27-year-old has fought in Spain, Panama and Italy throughout a pro career that dates back to 2007 and will be making his U.S. debut on April 16.

A popular Brooklyn fighter who competed in Barclays Center’s first-ever professional female boxing match, Hardy has become a staple at the arena since. On April 16, she will be making her sixth appearance at Barclays Center. A little over two years after her pro debut, Hardy won an international title belt in the super bantamweight division in October 2014 and followed it up in 2015 with a victory over Renata Domsodi and two over Noemi Bosques.

Fighting out of Lublin, Poland, Maciec will be making his second start in the U.S. and his first in the Polish-heavy borough of Brooklyn. The 26-year-old owns victories over veteran contenders Lanardo Tyner, Laszlo Fazekas and previously unbeaten Sasun Karapetyan.

Originally from Kosovo but fighting out of Belgium, Zenunaj made his U.S. debut in December 2015 and stopped Bryant Cruz in the seventh round to announce his presence stateside. The 28-year-old has won 10 fights in a row including eight in a row by knockout.

SAN ANTONIO, TX (December 24, 2015)- Yesterday hot undefeated super-featherweight prospect, Mario Barrios (14-0, 8 KOs), joined the Christmas spirit by donating gifts to the local boys and girls club in San Antonio. Barrios, along with cornerman Rick Nunez, delivered shoes and toys to the kids, brining smiles to everyone involved.

“It was great to see the smiles on all the kids when Rick and I dropped off the gifts,” said Mario Barrios. “I know there are a lot of kids out there that don’t get to receive many gifts during Christmas so it was nice to provide something extra for these children. MARIO BARRIOS SCORES SPECTACULAR KNOCKOUT

SAN ANTONIO, TX (December 12, 2015) Rising star and super-featherweight sensation, Mario Barrios (14-0, 8 KOs), remained undefeated with a spectacular sixth round knockout over Manuel Vides (18-5, 11 KOs). The bout, which was televised as part of the PBC on NBCSN took place at the AT&T Center in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas.

From the opening round, Barrios established his presence in the ring as he landed numerous power shots, mostly to the body and head. A powerful right uppercut followed by a monstrous left hook sent Vides crashing to the canvas head first, ending the bout at the 2:29 mark of round six.

“I felt strong going into the ring tonight,” said Mario Barrios. “We had a great training camp and I got a lot of good sparring to get me prepared for this fight. I got into a good rhythm early and kept my foot on the pedal. I had him hurt early but he was a very tough opponent and pushed me to the later rounds. By coach Bob Santos told me to start throwing more uppercuts and that’s when I landed that big shot in the sixth round. I followed the right uppercut with a left hook and got him out of there.”

With the win, Barrios, who’s been on fast track, recorded his seventh victory of 2015. He’s very pleased to be staying active as he ascends to the top of the super-featherweight division.”

SAN ANTONIO, TX (October 28, 2015 ) Rising star, undefeated super-featherweight Mario Barrios (12-0, 7 KOs), is scheduled to make his way back to the ring on November 10, 2015 at the Austin City Music Hall in Austin, Texas. Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS Fox Sports 1 and BOXEO DE CAMPEONES FOX Deportes will air the event live beginning at 9 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. PT. In the main-event, Alejandro “Cobrita” Gonzalez Jr. (25-2-2 15 KO) will meet Karim Guerfi (22-3, 6 KOs) in a 10-round Bantamweight bout. While waiting for an opponent to be announced, Barrios, headed to the San Francisco Bay Area to get some work in with lead cornerman, Bob Santos.

“Since I’ve been out here I’ve learned a lot working with Bob Santos,” said Mario Barrios. “Santos has a lot of experience working with top level fighters and he’s showing me new things to help me get better. There’s a lot of little things that we’ve been working on that make a tremendous amount of difference when I’m in the ring. I’m using different footwork while improving on my defense, things like that.”

Back in San Antonio, Barrios trains with his father Martin, who’s been with him since the amateurs when he started boxing at age 9. They’ve come along way together and have a special bond.

“My dad has always been there for me,” Barrios continued. “In addition to teaching me how to be a man, he taught me how to box and stay out of trouble. It’s tough finding sparring sometimes, but he’s always there to make the necessary sacrifices to get someone. He understands what it’s going to take for me to take my career to the next level, and I appreciate him for that. Together we make a very strong team.”

Barrios, who lives in nearby San Antonio, Texas, knows how important it will be to shine on national television. With a huge crowd expected to show support, Barrios is ready to his mark in the super-featherweight division.

“With this fight being shown on Fox Sports, I know it’s my time to show everyone in my division, including those who will be watching on television, why I’ve worked so hard to get to this position.” Mario Barrios concluded. “A lot of close friends and family will be there is show support, so I’m coming with everything I got. I don’t care who the opponent is, I’ll be ready to impress.”
