BROOKLYN (Oct. 5, 2017) – WBC Heavyweight World Champion Deontay Wilder will defend his title against mandatory challenger Bermane Stiverne on Saturday, Nov. 4 live on SHOWTIME in a rematch of their 2015 world title fight.  The event is presented by Premier Boxing Champions from Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™. 
 
Wilder (38-0, 37 KOs) dethroned defending champion Stiverne in January 2015 via unanimous decision in what was the promising challenger’s toughest fight to date.  With the win, Wilder became the first American heavyweight champion in nearly a decade and he has gone on to defend the title five times.  Stiverne (25-2-1, 21 KOs) remains the only Wilder opponent to go the distance with the hard-hitting Tuscaloosa, Ala., native who has knocked out every other professional opponent on his long resume.

The Nov. 4 main event will be the second heavyweight world championship bout to air live on SHOWTIME on back-to-back Saturdays.  On Oct. 28 unified heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua will meet Kubrat Pulev for Joshua’s IBF and WBA world titles in the main event of a fight card from Cardiff, Wales.
 
After Wilder vs. Stiverne I, Stiverne was hospitalized at University Medical Center in Las Vegas for severe dehydration and muscle damage, which he claimed affected his performance in his first title defense.  Stiverne bounced back with a win over Derric Rossy and has been advocating for a rematch since. 
 
“Stiverne asked for it, so he’s going to get it,” Wilder said. “Whatever happens happens. Ask and you shall receive.  I’m relieved to be getting my mandatory out of the way.  At least now I won’t have to deal with that down the road.  
 
“In the first fight, I broke my hand in the third round, and I still dominated.  That was a lot of the reason why it went the distance.  This time it’s a different day, different time and different fight.  This time it won’t end well for him. 
 
“Despite all of these obstacles that are thrown in my path, it still will not stop me from reaching my ultimate goal, which is to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.”
 
Stiverne replaces Luis Ortiz, who was pulled from the fight by the WBC on Wednesday after he failed a VADA anti-doping test. 
 
“Stiverne will pay for Luis Ortiz screwing up,” Wilder concluded. 
 
Stiverne was in camp preparing to fight Dominic Breazeale in a heavyweight attraction on the Nov. 4 undercard.  Now the Haitian-born Las Vegas resident gets a shot at winning back the heavyweight crown he first won with a knockout of Chris Arreola in 2014. 
 
“I am ready, willing and able to seize back my title from Wilder,” Stiverne said.  “We all know that Wilder dodged a bullet in the first fight, but not this time.  It was my fault, but I learn from my mistakes.  On November 4, Wilder will feel my pain.”
 
After defeating Stiverne, Wilder went on to knockout each of his next five challengers including twice as the headliner on SHOWTIME.  Wilder-Stiverne II will be the 10th heavyweight world championship fight to air live on SHOWTIME in the last two years as the heavyweight division continues its resurgence.  
 
“The show must go on, as they say, and Deontay Wilder still plans to put on a show for New York City,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment and promoter of the stacked Nov. 4 event.  “Considering Stiverne’s status as mandatory challenger, he was always going to be a roadblock in Deontay’s quest for heavyweight unification.  Now it’s time to see if Deontay can clear that roadblock and continue on his path to becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion and the most recognizable and dominant force in boxing.”
 
In the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING co-feature, former welterweight world champion Shawn Porter will battle perennial contender Adrian Granados in a matchup of two all-action fighters.  In the opening bout of the three-fight telecast beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, unbeaten contender Sergey Lipinets will take on Akihiro Kondo for the vacant IBF Junior Welterweight World Championship. 

Snippets On Arguably The Hottest Topics In The Sweet Science This Week

Sweet Home Ala…. BAM

Deontay Wilder ( 38-0 37 KO) stopped Gerald Washington (18-1-1 12 KO ) in the fifth round with a big right hand to successfully defend his WBC title. Wilder didn’t look great prior to the knockout and a little amateurish at times. He is still a bit raw but as long as he has the one-punch KO power he’ll continue to refine the other areas through on the job training. In his defense, this was his first fight after an almost eight month lay off due to bicep and hand injuries sustained in the Chris Arreola fight.

In the Bermane Stiverne fight when he won the title, Wilder looked like he had figured it all out. He boxed beautifully and landed his power in spots. He showed that he didn’t need to rely on only his power to be successful; however, in every fight since, there have only been glimpses of that Bronze Bomber.

After the fight, the talk was a matchup with WBO titlest Joseph Parker (22-0 18 KO); however breaking news is a rumoured WBC mandated rematch with Stiverne.

The wish here is a matchup with Luis Ortiz (27-0 23 KO) and/or the Anthony Joshua Wladimir Klitschko winner.

Unsustained Effort 

Back in 2015, Tony Harrison, rising undefeated prospect, was handily out-pointing Willie Nelson through eight rounds but got caught and stopped in the ninth round. Going into Saturday’s fight with Jarrett Hurd, Harrison had won three straight, two by stoppage, including an impressive victory over hard punching Fernando Guerrero.

Through the first eight rounds, Harrison (24-2 20 KO) exhibited a nice skill set on Saturday night. Early on, Harrison was doing all of the things that you’d want him to do, good lateral movement, an active jab, and combination punching; however, it would again be his defense that would be his demise.

Harrison was controlling most of the first eight rounds but Hurd (20-0 14 KO) slowly started to impose his will. If was almost as if Hurd conceded the rounds to Harrison and chose to look for one perfect counter, which he found in round nine.

As he had done in 2015, Harrison failed to sustain his effort throughout the fight.

Hurd captured the vacant IBF World Super Welterweight belt with the victory.

Lobby Rumble 

Later after the fight, Wilder goes after Heavyweight Dominic Breazeale because Breazeale had an altercation with Wilder’s brother. Wilder and his camp were alleged by the Breazeale camp to have “sucker punched” Breazeale and his coach in front of his wife and kids.

Both Wilder and Breazeale took to social media with their version of the events regarding the ordeal.

Breazeale was on the Wilder undercard stopping heavyweight prospect Izu Ugonoh in the fifth after coming off the canvas in the fourth.

Hold Off Judgement, It May Be Good

It has been announced that Manny Pacquiao (59-6-2 38 KO) and Amir Khan (31-4 19 KO) will knuckleup in April. There was a lot of grumbling after the announcement but this is actually an intriguing matchup.

Sweet Hands

Caleb Plant (15-0 10 KO) a top prospect in the Supper Middles dominated veteran/journeyman/gatekeeper Thomas Awinbono. Plant dropped Awinbono in the first and cruised the rest of the way. We’ve been following Plant and he seems to improve each fight. Smart matchmaking by his team, they are bringing him along at a great pace. His competition gets a bit tougher while he tightens up his game. From Tennessee, Planr recently relocated to Las Vegas to focus on his craft.

David Haye (28-2 26 KO) v. Tony Bellew (28-2 18 KO)  Does the natural cruiser stand a chance here? Does Haye have memories of being dropped to a knee by him in traning years ago as sparring partners?  Is it the power of Haye that will end things in brutal fashion or is it the boxing and speed of Bellew that can make things interesting?

Bellew was in a Rocky movie….maybe life imitates art??

Fighters spoke to media at the BJCC’s Arena Club inside the same venue that will host a stacked night of fights on Saturday night.

“I’ve wanted to hit somebody since May. I got teased but now it’s time. And I get to do it at home. There’s no better place to do it.

 

“We’ve had a few guys that we could have chosen, but there were certain guys we didn’t want to give a short notice opportunity. We needed a certain type of fighter for this job.

 

“We need someone who will fight with their heart and take this opportunity and make the most of it. Does he deserve the title shot? No he doesn’t. He knows it. But is Chris Arreola the perfect
guy for this fight? Of course he is.

 

“Chris is lucky to get a third chance at a title. There’s a lot of prospects who would love to fight him just to get a chance to fight for this belt. We needed a special person for this
situation and I blessed Chris Arreola with the opportunity.

“I need wins like this to get fights with Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman and I need to do it decisively.

 

“If I can get this win I definitely want Danny Garcia. He’s a Philadelphia guy. I’m from Pittsburgh, it’d be a fun matchup. We’re both marketable guys and I think it’d be a huge fight.

The fighters worked out at Round 1 Boxing in Vestavia Hills, Alabama as they prepare for the card headlined by the hometown favorite, Wilder, making the fourth defense of his heavyweight title.

DEONTAY WILDER

“When it comes to Deontay Wilder, people look for the knockouts and I deliver. What separates me from other heavyweights is the fashion in which I knock guys out. I don’t just knock you
out, I really put you out.

“Arreola definitely has a style prone to a knockout. He’s a pressure fighter who will come forward all night. That plays to my style. I love pressure fighters who give me a challenge. They
keep me moving and thinking. I love the sweet science and the art to it.

“I never look at films of opponents because I want to be surprised and I want to give myself a mental challenge in there. That’s what makes this sport so great.

“Birmingham has showed me love from day one. I don’t just represent my city; I represent the state. Everywhere is my home. Birmingham understands entertainment and excitement and what I’m
trying to bring to people here.

“I’m here to defend my title against a very hungry fighter. It’s a life-changing event for the man who holds the belt at the end of the night. 

“I never look past anybody. But I can look through them. Before I became a champion, I said I wanted to be an active champion. Just like I was active coming up. This has been my longest
time away from the ring, so if all goes well on Saturday, I want to be back in the next few months.

“I have an ability to get out of bed and fight. I can do things that regular fighters can’t do. I don’t do miles of roadwork. I’m blessed with stamina.

CHRIS ARREOLA

“Deontay is a very tough opponent so I have to come hard this time. This is my third world title shot and I have to make it count. The first time I was too young, the second time I got caught
with a shot, but this time I’ll be ready for anything.

“Fighting a guy like Wilder, I have to be ready for anything. But he has to be ready too. I’m no slouch. I have fire and he’s another person in my way. I’m here to get it.

“There’s no challenge to get ready for a fight. I’m a boxer, this is what I do and this is what I love to do. Boxing is the most gentlemanly sport there is. You beat each other up then you
shake hands like nothing happened. I’ve been grinding every day in the gym for this.

“This is a big night for both of us. It’s a great opportunity to be on primetime. People are going to be watching for free at sports bars and it puts us out there. They’re going to watch
two big men on display going for it all.

“I took it one day at a time in camp. I had to grind and get better every single day. I fear no man. I respect the man, but I don’t fear him. Everybody knows that I fight coming forward.
I have to be smart and I have to move in angles. 

“I want to leave a legacy behind. When they talk about Chris Arreola, they’re going to say ‘he did it.’ I took the long road but here we are now.

“I expect him to have a lot of fans and he’s very deserving of that. He’s made things happen in this state and this state is lucky to have a fighter like him. But no one can get in there
with him. The fans can’t fight for him. I love the fans, but they’re just there to watch. It’s just me and Wilder in there Saturday.

“Beating Bermane Stiverne and defending the title how he has, I definitely respect Deontay. The humility that Deontay has shown has been impressive. He was more brash coming up the rankings
and flamboyant. Now he’s come into his own and he understands who he is.

“The biggest difference between now and earlier in my career is that I’m comfortable with myself. My main motivation is being a boxer. I’m a boxer first. It’s not about who has the better
six-pack.

“Weaknesses are something that I have to bring out of Deontay. Someone different shows up every fight. We have a plan but we’ll have to expose him while I’m in the ring. You can see videos
all day, but it might not be the same guy in the ring.”

SAMMY VASQUEZ JR. 

“I think this fight goes eight rounds at the most. It’s tough to predict and he’s a shifty guy but I’m confident. I’m going to key in on the body and try to wear him out. I’ll be smart about
it, because I have to make a statement in this fight.

“My reach and my height will give me an advantage but he’s a slick fighter. All of these things can be advantages, but they can also work against you. I like to box and keep my opponent
at range. I can’t let him smother me. We’re very prepared for his best shots.

“I think it’s going to be a great fight. He has a great amateur pedigree but I think I’ve made more impact as a pro. We’re equals and it’ll make for an explosive fight.

“Diaz is a slick southpaw, just like Luis Collazo. He’s had a couple decent names on his resume. I think Lamont Peterson fell into Diaz’s trap a little bit, which made that a close fight.
He’s coming up to my weight, but he brings it and he’s dangerous.

“It feels good to be here. It’s been a long training camp leading up to an unbelievable card like this. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be here. My coach (Charles Leverette) is
from Alabama and he represents the state hard, so I’ve been on the ‘Roll Tide’ bandwagon.

“When I was young I remember watching great heavyweight title fights and now to be on the undercard of one is incredible. There are kids out there looking at me and Deontay in the same way.
It’s amazing. It’s a blessing that really boosts my career and lets people get to know me better.”

FELIX DIAZ

“Sammy is a very good opponent of course. He’s undefeated right now, but he won’t be after Saturday.

“Moving up to 147 is going to be great for me and allow me to be at my very best. I think I can do big things in this division and Saturday night will be the start.

“What you train for and what happens in the ring are two different things. I’m prepared for anything that could happen in the ring.

“I have a great team and training camp has gone very well. I’ve been ready to fight for a long time and I can’t wait to get in the ring.

“Everyone should come out, because it’s going to be a great fight. I’m very confident in my ability to pull off this victory.

Roll Tide- Alabama’s Deontay Wilder Captures The WBC Heavyweight Championship

The questionable competition, the elephant in the room, is now gone, the resume strengthened. Deontay WIlder (33-0 32 KO) will no longer have to be questioned about the lack of a quality opponent on his dossier after a thoroughly convincing win over WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne (24-2-1 24 KO).

Executing trainer Mark Breland’s outstanding game plan, Wilder used a piston like jab to keep Stiverne off balance while landing timely right hands, uppercuts, and left hooks. Almost like watching a large version of Breland himself.

Stiverne did have a few moments landing his own right hand and left hook but they were few and far between. Additionally, his usually active jab was nonexistent and he failed to cut off the ring which allowed Wilder to control all aspects of the fight.

Each took solid shots from the other; however, Wilder’s did more damage as he stunned Stiverne several times but B. Ware’s beard was as advertised. On the contrary, Wilder was thought to have a questionable chin but he put those assumptions to rest as he took some heavy shots from Stiverne without issue.

Wilder dominated the judges scorecards, 118-109, 120-107, 119-108 and became the first American heavyweight champion since 2006 and fulfilled the promise he made to his daughter Naieya to become a world champion.

There were so many questions about Wilder coming in that were answered tonight,

Can he take a punch? CHECK

Can he adapt when his punches don’t stop his opponent-CHECK

Can he go the distance if needed after never having been past the fourth round? CHECK

Can he survive once he faces a quality opponent? CHECK

Can he do more than punch, like box? CHECK! CHECK!

“I don’t want anybody to doubt me no more, come with me, ride with me, slide with me, hide with me, whatever we got to do..lets go!” stated Wilder

On what is next for the new champion, Wilder stated, “I want to bring excitement to the heavyweight division, I don’t want to be a champion who sits around a year or two, I want to get three…if I’m lucky, four times a year, this is my nine to five, this is my burger flipping right here, so I’m ready whenever”

Wilder’s performance was of the highest caliber for someone who apparently couldn’t do the things that he did. It will be scary to see what he can accomplish as he continues to learn and develop. As a raw prospect just a few years ago to a world champion today, he has only just begun. The Bronze Bomber has awakened a dormant division with a single victory and ensured that the elephant never enters the room again.

Thanks For Winning, Your Parting Gift Is Labeled GGG…..

This past weekend, the WBC’s #1 rated middleweight, Martin Murray, defeated Domenico Spada by seventh round technical decision. Spada’s right eye had been cut early in the fight by a Murray head butt and while the fight had been relatively close at the time of the stoppage, Murray was winning the fight.

So, what does Murray get for his troubles? A February 2015 date with Gennady Golovkin.

In Murray’s only loss, he did take Sergio Martinez the distance in a closer fight than most expected and even floored Martinez in his backyard of Argentina but Martinez was clearly not physically sound in that bout.

Oddly, Murray used tactics against Spada that would serve him well against Golovkin, like tying Spada up when he tried to get his power shots off and throwing a lot of jabs, problem is Murray doesn’t have power enough to keep Golovkin honest.

Heavy’s Are Heating Up

Finally we are going to get some answers about the future of the heavyweight division.  It was announced that a fight between Deontay Wilder and Bermane Stiverne was near and may happen as early as January. What will happen when Wilder gets hit because he will get hit? How will Stiverne overcome the height and reach of Wilder to land his power shots and in doing so will he leave himself open for a counter? Yes, we are going to learn a lot in the near future.

Keep Telling Yourself  And You May Just Believe It

First, Freddy Roach said that Chris Algieri is not in Manny Pacquiao’s class and that he has jumped too soon.  Now, Roach claims that Pacman’s sparring partner Viktor Postol and others in the camp would be tougher fights than Algieri.  Yes, I know, just Freddy being Freddy, but honestly, I expected more out of a Hall of Fame trainer. He should know talent when he sees it. Ironically, he probably does see it which is why he feels the need to play the mind games. He must see something in both camps that has him concerned. Seems like he is trying to convince his camp more than Algieri’s? Truth is, Algieri is a new breed of fighter, 2.0 as you will. A different approach to training, nutrition, and strategic thinking. Be careful Freddy…

It Could Happen

So, Algieri wasn’t supposed to beat Ruslan Provodnikov, now he’s not supposed to beat Pacquiao. What if? What if he beats Pacquiao and it is him not the Pacman who is rewarded with a Floyd Mayweather fight? Of course, he will not be expected to win that fight either, but what if……….. What an epic run that would be.

Bombs Away

Tommy Coyle knocked out Michael Katsidis on Saturday with a wicked left hook counter in the second round. Katsidis, always a warrior, tried gallantly to get to his feet but was visibly too hurt to continue casing the ref to wave off the fight.  The win by Coyle will reportedly set up a fight against Luke Campbell, who also was victorious on an undercard bout.

Making The Most Of Your Opportunities

As the old adage goes, “Good things come to those who wait”; that could not have been truer for Kell Brook last night when he defeated Shawn Porter by majority decision and captured Porter’s IBF welterweight belt. Brook “almost” had opportunities in the past when he was scheduled to face then champion Devon Alexander a few times, but injuries cancelled the bouts. Porter ultimately was provided the title shot and defeated Alexander to capture the title thus eventually setting up the fight with Brook. Brook showed just how “Special” he is by boxing beautifully and countering Porter throughout the fight. Porter rushed Brook consistently throughout the fight and although he landed clean scoring punches from time to time, he missed more than he connected. Brook’s game plan was executed exceptionally well as he looked to use Porter’s aggressiveness against him by looking for openings in Porter’s guard. I hope Brook gives his team a bonus; they earned it with the game plan. Brook landed several solid shots during the course of the fight that seemed to surprise Porter. Although Porter stayed aggressive until the final bell, you could see the frustration on his face get more evident as each round passed. Brook did hold in an attempt to slow Porter and much has been said about that affecting the outcome of the fight. Yes, he did strategically hold when needed and it probably warranted at least a warning but that shouldn’t take away from the victory or Brook’s performance.

Keep Calm And Box On

Most impressive about Brook’s victory over Porter was his composure. Porter was rushing him with Tyson like aggression only to see Brook simply counter him, induce a clinch, or use excellent lateral movement to escape. He finally got his chance for a shot at the title and he did not let his nerves get the better of him.

Do We Have To Complain About Every Decision Now?

Ok, I know that there have been bad decisions in boxing and when the injustice occurs it’s appropriate to question the thought process of the adjudicator but the Brook vs. Porter decision was not one of those times. The decision and victory to Brook seemed to be blasted on social media and in some boxing circles. Sorry to disagree folks, they got it right.

Effective aggressiveness- Edge Brook (Before you argue this one, look up the definition of effective)
Ring Generalship- Edge Brook
Clean Effective Punching- Edge Brook
Defense- Edge Brook
Bottom line is Brook won this fight and was awarded the victory. It’s ok for the rightful winner to leave with belt, that’s how it’s supposed to work.

The Dog Bites The Scorpion

Anthony Dirrell defeated Sakio Bika to win the WBC super middleweight title in a highly anticipated rematch. Dirrell tried to take Bika’s title last December when the combatants fought to a draw in a foul filled affair. On Saturday night, a lot of the rough housing continued but mostly by Bika. Dirrell stayed composed and landed more punches, power shots, and jabs in route to a unanimous decision win. Both men had about eight months to watch the film and adjust their game plans. It was obvious that Dirrell was the better student and did his homework. Maybe the Dog ate Bika’s homework??

Moving On Up

140 will be getting a new resident. Omar Figueroa is on his way. Figueroa retained his WBC lightweight title with a ninth round TKO over Daniel Estrada but is now ready to move up to 140. We will be learning a lot about Figueroa at 140, it’s an awfully competitive division.

Roll Tide

Another Deontay Wilder fight, another knockout. Jason Gavern was the recipient this time around. This fight was exactly what it was supposed to be, a chance for The Bronze Bomber to get some work in while he awaits a chance to fight Bermane Stiverne for Stiverne’s WBC title. I think I preferred his beat down of the internet troll over this one.

A Swift Return And Exit
Danny Garcia returned to the ring on Saturday night from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York and did what he was supposed to do, make quick work of opponent Rod Salka. Garcia knocked Salka silly by second round knockout by way of his money maker, the left hook. Not a whole lot can be made of the victory. “The Lighting Rod” was rated so poorly by the alphabet soup that the fight was not sanctioned, thus not putting Garcia’s WBC and WBA belts on the line. Even though Garcia wasn’t fighting a serious threat, he looked sharp and extremely quick. Prior to this fight, his last eight opponents were or had been former title holders. That is quite a run of top level competition so it’s not inexcusable to cut “Swift” a break here for choice of opponent. That said, his next defense better be against a legitimate threat (insert Lamont Peterson here) or his strong run will be for naught. Even with the victory, he moves down one on the Standing 8 P4P List.

Doctor’s Orders
Like Garcia, Lamont Peterson also did what was expected of him by thoroughly defeating 35 year old Edgar Santana by tenth round TKO. Peterson looked in top form using all phases of the sweet science in out landing Santana 281-94 in total punches. He worked the body like a madman recalling memories of Mike McCallum. Peterson dominated so thoroughly that the ringside doctor stopped the fight in the tenth, he had seen enough. A Peterson Garcia matchup would be a purist’s dream. This would be a matchup on the highest of levels. A boxing match that would see each fighter look to land their power shots. Let’s hope it’s made next.

Live Strong
Danny Jacobs kicked cancer in its ass. “The Miracle Man” has been an inspiration to many during his journey, but Saturday night he took it to another level when he defeated Jarrod Fletcher by fifth round TKO and captured the vacant WBA middleweight title. He is absolutely one of the nicest guys in the sport and a champion for a cause that is bigger than the sport.

Game On!
The bout between Tyson Fury and Dereck Chisora is back on and scheduled for November 22 in London. Previously, they were set to meet on July 26 in Manchester, England but Chisora injured his left hand and had to pull out of the fight. This fight is a rematch of their July 2011 bout which saw Fury decision Chisora and give him his first loss. These two have had an entertaining war of words going on for a few years, so let’s just hope that it carries over into the ring.

Follow Me Into The Thunder(Dome)
The StubHub Center, or as I like to affectionately refer to as The Thunderdome, is known for classic slugfests and fights of the year candidates, most recently the Robert Guerrero vs. Yoshihiro Kamegai battle and April’s Lucas Matthysse vs. John Molina Jr. respectively. It should be no different this Saturday when the venue form Carson, California will be rocking once again with excellent matchups and intriguing story lines.
This card is ABSOLUTELY STACKED!!! Shawn Porter will be facing Kell Brook for Porter’s IBF welterweight title, an intriguing matchup that will not disappoint. The co-feature is a rematch between Sakio Bika and Anthony Dirrell who fought to a draw last December. If those two fights don’t get pumped, then add in Omar Figueroa vs. Daniel Estrada for Figueroa’s belt. WOW. Oh, and just for good measure, Deontay Wilder will be on the card to face an opponent not yet named but rumored to be Jason Gavern.
