For this training camp, Barrios has moved part of his training camp from San Antonio to Las Vegas where he has sparred at the UNLV Gym and at the gym of former world champion Robert Guerrero.

Here is what Barrios had to say about his fight, training camp and more:

On fighting in his first 12-round main event

“This is what I’ve worked my whole life for, to be fighting in main events on national television.  I’m confident that I’ll be able to the full 12-rounds if need be.  My goal is to get the knockout though.  I really want to make a statement in this fight.”

On his matchup with Devis Boschiero...

“All I know about Boschiero is that he’s got a lot of fights and he’s a top contender.  I know he’s hungry so I’m not taking him lightly.  I’ve seen some tape on him and I know he likes to come forward.  Everyone can expect to see a lot of had punches being thrown by both of us.  I’m expecting a war.”

On the landscape of the super featherweight division

“It’s a very tough division loaded with a lot of great fighters.  I would say Lomachenko, Pedraza and Vargas are the top dogs for now.  Salido is also up there.  It’s one of the toughest divisions in boxing. I’m hoping I can become a champion in this division.  A victory against Boschiero puts me right there to challenge for the title.  I’m a hungry fighter and everyone will see that on July 9.”

On hosting training camp in Las Vegas for the first time

“Training in Las Vegas has been incredible.  Running in high elevation is something new for me.  I had to get used to it when I first got out here.  It’s been a tough camp but I know all the hard word will pay off.”

On fighting on ESPN during primetime on Saturday night...

“I’m very happy to be fighting on ESPN during primetime on Saturday night.  I have a lot of family, friends and fans back home who’ll be tuning in.  I just want to go out there and shine. I feel my style is explosive for television and I hope everyone enjoys what I bring to the table.  Everyone will see a determined fighter in myself, who’s going to leave everything in the ring.”

Press Release     For Immediate Release

MONTREAL, QUEBEC (August 17, 2015 – This past Saturday at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, super-middleweight prospect, Caleb “Sweet-Hands” Plant (9-0, 8 KOs), remained undefeated with a first round knockout over late sub, Zoltan Sera (20-6, 12 KOs).  The bout served as the swing bout for the PBC on NBC broadcast, headlined by Lucian Bute (32-2, 23 KOs) vs. Andrea Di Luisa (17-3, 13 KOs).

Plant sent Sera to the canvas twice before ending the bout with a left hook to the jaw at the 2:19 mark of the opening round.  Plant set everything up with a nice jab that helped him time all his power punches.  Once Plant saw that Sera was hurt, he went for the knockout.

“I wanted to make a statement with an impressive win and I was fortunate to land a couple of hard shots in the early part of round one that hurt my opponent,” said Caleb Plant. “After seeing him on wobbly legs I went for the kill.  I want to thank Al Haymon for this tremendous opportunity to showcase my skills on NBC.  I’m looking forward to getting back in the ring.  I’m ready to move forward and continue marching up the rankings.”

Garcia Too Much For Malignaggi, Jacobs Wins

wpid-e5cd8264-2f40-4241-bdbf-adf360c2e786.png

Danny Garcia TKO 9 Over Paulie Malignaggi

Danny Garcia (31-0 18 KO) took his first step into the welterweight division this evening from Barclays in Brooklyn and stopped Paulie Malignaggi (33-7 9 KO) in the ninth round. The stoppage by Referee Arthur Mercante was the kind that some would say good stoppage, some too quick but both would agree that Garcia was well ahead.

Malignaggi did his best work while jabbing high and low and exhibiting excellent feints and footwork but his lack of power posed little threat to Garcia. As such, Garcia was able to control the fight and stalk Malignaggi while wearing him down over the course of the fight. Garcia cut Malignaggi under the right eye in the third and continued to go after it causing Mercante to direct the ring side physician to take a few looks. Prior to the ninth round, Mercante did tell Malignaggi that he would have to see something from him and if he took unneeded punishment he would stop it.

In the ninth, Malinaggi showed little while Garcia landed a crisp combination off of Malignagi’s head causing Mercante to jump in and put an end to the fight.

Malignaggi was not hurt badly but the combination of his cut and the lopsided scores at the time which were 79-73 X 2 and 78-74, apparently was enough for Mercante.

It’s not like this was a great performance by Garcia, he could have attacked Malignaggi and impose his will but never did. It will be interesting to see what happens when a more formidable opponent gets his chance at the new kid in the division.

Malignaggi, a class act who always gave his all, is nearing retirement but he won’t be far as his moonlighting job as an announcer will become full time.

Danny Jacobs TKO 2 Over Sergio Mora

Danny Jacobs (30-1 27 KO) defeated Sergio Mora (28-4 9 KO) in the second round when Mora went down and the fight was waved off but it was less of what Jacobs did and apparently a leg injury that was the culprit.

Mora stated that he “head something pop” in his knee and that he thinks his ankle is broken. The replay shows him going down awkwardly as he was moving away from Jacobs.

The fight started with explosion as both fighters tasted the canvas in the opening round . Jacobs dropped Mora with a crisp right hook half way through the first. Mora was a bit dazed but got up and took a cursory count. Jacobs closed in to finish him and got careless as Mora landed a left counter hook dropping Jacobs for only the second time in his career. Jacobs was probably hurt worse than Mora was but has excellent recuperative powers and was able to land a few more decent shots on Mora at the bell.

It’s too bad that this one had to end the way it did, the first round was probably the round of the year and it had all the signs of a great fight.

Update 8/2- Hopefully the decision will be changed to a “no-contest” because it has been reported that Mora suffered a fractured ankle.

Press Release   For Immediate Release

EL PASO, TX (July 19, 2015) – In his first 8-round bout, undefeated Super-Featherweight sensation, Mario Barrios (10-0, 5 KOs), cruised to a sound victory against Arturo Esquivel (9-3, 2 KOs), to record his tenth win.  The impressive conquest took place this past Saturday at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas on the PBC on CBS event, headlined by Carl Frampton vs. Alejandro Gonzalez Jr.

Using his tremendous height and reach advantage, Barrios controlled the action with a long jab and precise combinations.  Esquivel, who was the naturally bigger man, wasn’t able to land any clean punches on Barrios, who won every round.  Scorecards read 80-72 across the board.

“Going eight rounds for the first time was a great learning experience for me.” said Mario Barrios, who is managed by Al Haymon. “I was able to pace myself throughout the entire fight and never got tired.  I could have gone four more rounds if this was a twelve round fight.  Esquivel is a very tough fighter and I’m glad we both came out healthy.  I’ll be ready to get back in the ring as soon as Haymon has another date for me.  I’m very thankful for all the opportunities Haymon Boxing has given me.”

No Problems Being Showtime

image

“Showtime” Shawn Porter (26-1-1 16 KO)  defeated Adrien “The Problem” Broner (30-2 22 KO) by unanimous decision with scores of 114-112, 115-111, and 118- 108.

From the opening bell, Porter was the aggressor, using his powerful left jab to work his way in and landing overhand rights/lefts and multiple combinations while trying to deal with Broner’s bush league tactics.

Broner had his best moments when he landed left and right counter hooks as Porter rushed in but he discredited himself by constantly holding and pushing down the relentless Porter. Granted Porter was coming in low but Broner was intentional in his felonious actions. He was warned several times by referee Tony Weeks who rightfully could have taken a point many times but waited until the eleventh to do so.

In the twelfth and final round, Broner landed a perfect left counter as Porter came in and dropped him for the first time in his career. Poter got up with a look to say “ya got me” but continued his aggressive approach through to the bell. A little too late for Broner as it was just Porter’s night in all aspects.

Throughout the fight, Porter was just the more active fighter pushing every second. Even in the close rounds, Porter’s high energy attack was the difference. Look no further than the numbers to see Porter’s dominance. Porter threw more punches, 590 to 309, landed more 149 to 88 as well as led in both power punch categories, 398-206 thrown, 99-68 landed.

Porter on his performance after the fight –

“You know what? That’s how you beat a great fighter intelligently, we did everything we needed to do in preparation for this fight and coming out we wanted to establish our jab, establish that we are the better boxer, I think we did that over the course of the fight, try to stick with the pressure as well, and establish dominance”

Broner On The Loss-

I’m ok, my kids are ok, I’m financially fine,  it was a good fight at the end of the day, great champions can take a good loss, great champions can take a good win,

“I still will fight anybody, I am a real animal, I came to fight today, I didn’t get the decision, but at the end of the day, everybody here will take an autograph and take my picture”

For Porter, this is the start of a great run. A fight with Keith Thurman has been rumored in the past and no doubt he would like to avenge the Kell Brook loss. Wherever his journey takes him, his opponents better be ready to fight every second of every round against one of the best conditioned and well prepared athletes in the game.

For Broner…..he needs to get serious about his craft and have a back up plan when his strategy is not working. He has all the physical gifts but his mindset needs an overhaul. Broner will take on any challenge but anything North of 140 may be his Achilles heel.

Knuckle Up For The Heart Of It All

image

2015 has already been a monumental year in the sweet science. We have seen some of greatest matchups in recent years with the best fighting the best in their primes, the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) bringing the sport back to its roots on network TV, the “fight of the century”, and the return of an American heavyweight champion.

With all that has happened in the sport through just about five and a half months of the year, it’s hard to imagine that we may get the best fight yet on June 20th. The PBC on NBC will air the “Battle of Ohio” in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand as Cincinnati’s Adrien “The Problem” Broner (30-1 22 KO) faces Akron’s “Showtime” Shawn Porter (25-1-1 16 KO).

Broner enters this fight on the strength of three straight unanimous decision victories since his lone loss to Marcos Maidana in 2013. Broner had jumped to welterweight from lightweight in the middle of 2013 after holding titles at super featherweight and lightweight. He found the difference in weight to be a bit more difficult as he won a close, slightly disputed bout against Paulie Malignaggi and then followed that up with a unanimous decision loss to Maidana which saw him get dropped for the first two times in his career.

After the Maidana fight, Broner dropped down to 140 where he has won his last three fights defeating Carlos Molina, Emmanuel Taylor and John Molina Jr. In his last fight against the relatively flat footed Molina Jr., Broner used his tremendous speed to thoroughly dominate the bout.

Porter has fought primarily at welterweight winning a world title in 2013 with a unanimous decision over Devon Alexander and defending it once with a fourth round stoppage of Malignaggi. In his second title defense, Porter suffered his only loss, a majority decision, last August at the hands of Kell Brook. Porter rushed Brook consistently throughout the fight and although he landed clean scoring punches from time to time, he missed more than he connected. Brook’s game plan was executed exceptionally well as he looked to use Porter’s aggressiveness against him by looking for and finding openings in Porter’s guard and landing quick solid shots which seemed to surprise Porter. Although Porter stayed aggressive until the final bell, you could see the frustration on his face get more evident as each round passed through to the final bell and decision.

In Porter’s last fight in March, he was supposed to face brawler Roberto Garcia but due to Garcia’s weight and hydration issues, Garcia was replaced by Erick Bone whom Porter stopped in five rounds. Before being stopped, Bone made it difficult for Porter each round and did land several solid power shots due to Porter’s wildness and porous defense.

The Porter-Broner fight will be contested at a catch weight of 144 with a 10 pound rehydration clause which some feel will hurt Porter, the naturally bigger fighter moving down, and be an advantage for the lighter Broner. Porter is known to have a disciplined approach to his training regimen and is always in top shape so this minimal drop and hydration stipulation is most likely a non-issue.

This is an amazing matchup as the two former welterweight title holders both have the skill set to make this a fight for the ages with a win catapulting them towards elite status.

Porter does his best work inside and throws his punches with bad intentions like a miniature Mike Tyson. Additionally, he is a pressure fighter who comes forward and attacks and we will probably see a lot of similarities in his style here with how Maidana pursued and made the fight physical with Broner. The difference here is that Porter is much quicker than Maidana with only a slight drop off in power which could spell trouble for Broner if he is not able to keep Porter at bay with his jab and movement. Porter will not only look to do damage up high, he is also adept at working the body which will benefit him against a movement fighter like Broner. Porter does get wild at times and can be found rather easily as he was in the Bone and Brook fight so he will need to tighten up his defense a bit against the quick counter punching of Broner.

Broner does his best work on the outside using his speed and reach to soften up his opponent with multiple combinations while looking for counter power shots that can put his adversary in trouble. Along with keeping his jab active, Broner will look to counter the charging Porter and may employ similar tactics as Brook did when facing Porter, strategically tying Porter up to negate his aggression. Broner had difficulty at 147 and was coming in to his own at 140 so it will be interesting to see him perform at this catch weight against the most multi faceted skilled fighter he’s faced.

June 20th is a big day in the sport as Andre Ward returns on the first PBC on BET card, rising star Errol Spence Jr. faces his toughest opponent to date in Roberto Garcia, and in Quebec, David Lemieux will battle Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam for the vacant IBF world middleweight title. Make no mistake though; Porter vs. Broner is the crème de la crème on this day and a potential fight of the year candidate.

Growing up in Ohio, Porter and Broner were separated by about 230 miles down I-71. They have followed each other since the amateurs; however, on June 20th one will separate from the other and capture state bragging rights while another epic chapter is written in the annals of 2015.

If boxing is dead, why do I feel so alive?
